I like building teams with talented people. Let’s be honest, we all do. They’re good at what they do, they work quickly, and they help you move the ball down the field. They often make you look better than you actually are. I want Milestone to be a place that gifted people want to be. But here’s the truth:
Talent is overrated.
I’d rather hire someone with a positive attitude and a good spirit. I’d rather go after someone who is coachable, someone who wants to learn, someone with high potential that you can develop. If someone on your team believes their way is the best way, it (their strategy, their ideas, their team) will never improve. They can’t improve what they have to defend.
But there’s good news—there are people who are talented and have a great spirit. They’re gifted and coachable. A word of advice: when you find those people…hire them.
